Movies are good, but…

There are some books that even the best-made movies can’t really capture.

I’m not one of those who always goes around saying, “But the book was better!”, because I don’t always think that’s true. I’ve only read two Cormac McCarthy novels (so far), and seen those two movies–The Road and All the Pretty Horses–but there’s something about the internal voices of the novels that the movies, even as well done as these are, can’t capture.

A voice-over just isn’t the same.


The Road

I borrowed Cormac McCarthy’s The Road from a friend a week or two ago, and it almost made me late a few times. Incredibly hard to put down.

Because my mind and heart are still so full with it, I just want to share the publisher’s description:

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don”t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food–and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other”s world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.”

McCarthy’s style here is a bit unorthodox, but I loved it. Reminded me of Steinbeck in the way that it’s spare overall, yet, at times, descriptively rich.

And the ending is perfect. Not happy. Not hopeless. Just. Right.
